I have finished the drawing “The pirate girl” for the cover of the book ‘Your swash is unbuckled II’. This book by Jeff Goode is a collection of short stage-combat plays. If you click on the image you can see a few different stages in the drawing process.
As you can see I am building up my drawings by working at the whole drawing at once and during the process of adding new layers ( every new layer with a softer pencil ) I am looking for the right contrast and shading. I started with a ‘H’ and ended up with a ’6B’ graphite pencil.

Ik heb de tekening “The pirate girl” voor op de boekcover van het boek ‘Your swash is unbuckled II’ afgemaakt. Dit boek van Jeff Goode bestaat uit een collectie van korte ‘gevechts’ toneelstukken. Als je op de afbeelding klikt kun je een paar verschillende fasen zien uit het tekenproces van deze tekening.
Zoals je kunt zien bouw ik mijn tekeningen op door te werken over het gehele vlak tegelijk en in verschillende lagen zoek ik zo voorzichtig naar het juiste contrast. Dit door in iedere fase een zachter potlood te gebruiken. Ik start met een ‘H’ en eindig met een ’6B’ grafiet potlood voor de donkerste tonen.

When you look at the sketch that I’ve done before as a reference for this drawing you probably notice a few changes. I’ve changed the hand who holds the sword because I was’nt happy with the sketch version. I also changed the shading in the face and made it softer. This was a request by the publisher ( Baker’s Plays ). I also gave her a neckglace with shellves and a skull.

Als je kijkt naar de schets die ik eerder gemaakt heb als referentie voor deze tekening zie je waarschijnlijk een paar veranderingen. Ik heb de hand verandert die het zwaard vasthoud omdat ik niet bepaald blij was met de schets versie. Ook heb ik de schaduwen in het gezicht verzacht. Dit op verzoek van de publisher ( Baker’s Plays ). Ik heb het piraten meisje ook nog een halsketting gegeven met schelpen en een doodshoofd.
